I am a private pay clinician. My rates are $150 for initial assessment and intake, and $125 per 55-minute therapy session. I accept major credit cards and HSA/FSA cards as methods of payment. I'm also happy to provide superbills for clients who request them.
Let's talk about the elephant.
I started my mental health career as a public school counselor, largely due to ease of access to care and lack of financial barriers. I absolutely recognize that not taking insurance could create barriers to care, and as a clinician, I struggled with this decision. In the interest of transparency here is some more information about my choice to forego panelling with insurance networks.
- Panelling with insurance often requires proving "necessity of care"- essentially proving to insurance networks that clients need to meet with a therapist. This is often a complex, nuanced, and frustrating process, as many of you have likely experienced with other health concerns.
- This means insurance companies may attempt to dictate our work to align with their preset standards for mental health care. This could look like mandating diagnoses before care has been appropriately established, disagreeing with assessments or diagnoses, or rejecting notes and/or treatment plans. All of this could occur without any conversation or contact with me or with my client.
- Insurance companies reserve the right to either not issue or revoke payments for services rendered. This may be due to lack of perceived "necessity of care," error on their part, or perceived error on mine. This often results in significant amounts of time spent chasing payments or battling for a client's right to receive equitable care.
I recognize the weight of my decision to forego insurance and am happy to talk through this decision process in more detail. I can also provide support and guidance in navigating conversations with your insurance network to determine whether you have any OON benefits, or would benefit from a superbill for reimbursement.
